I especially love a story where the gracious hand of God is evident and interwoven in a lot of events and circumstances. Dina and Robby have just that kind of story – a beautiful tapestry of God’s amazing grace.

Dina’s story, in part, includes growing up in Honduras at the Orphanage Emmanuel in Guaimaca, Honduras. Our church, Red Bank Baptist, has been ministering there for over 20 years. So throughout the years, the Charlotte and Steve Mabry family sponsored Dina and, when it was time for college, helped her come to the United States.  Dina was able to get her GED while attending Chattanooga State Community College.

Dina quickly adjusted to life in the United States and found great friendships through the College Ministry in our church. Robby, too, liked the fellowship and spiritual challenge of RBBC, and it was after one special get together that he met Dina. Their initial meeting was rocky at best, but they soon discovered that first impressions are not always accurate.

He asked her out…she accepted. After dating for two years, he proposed…she accepted. Almost a year later,  they asked us to photograph their wedding…we accepted. Here is a link to their engagement pictures.

After all, this person is the one who will be with you the whole day. Knowing the right questions to ask can make choosing your photographer a fun, exciting, and enjoyable experience.

1. Price?

Couples should ask this question first. Know your budget and know what you want for a finished product. Knowing what you can spend will lead you to the photographer you can afford. Make the decision right away if having the best photographs is important. Ask if there are discounts for paying in cash or having your wedding on any other day other than Saturday. If you are getting married in any month other than one considered a popular wedding month, ask for a special discount. For example, in an excellent article by Susan Breslow Sardone, the most popular months for weddings to take place are, in this order:

  • June
  • August
  • May
  • July
  • September
  • October
  • December
  • November/April (tie)
  • February
  • March
  • January

So don’t hesitate to ask, “what can you do for me since I’m getting married in April?” (Or any of the other less than popular months.) The best thing is to start with pricing questions and you will be ready to ask more.

2. Why You?

Hopefully you are asking this question looking face to face with your prospective photographer. As a photographer, I love the question, “Why should I choose you to photograph my wedding?”  This question helps you discern what type of person he or she is and you will get a feel for his or her personality. You know how important first impressions are so trust your instincts and be sure to listen well.

3. Who is Coming?

Some photography studios have multiple photographers while other studios have only one photographer, so this is an important thing to know. Yes, many weddings are still photographed by one photographer. He or she might bring along an assistant, but if you want two photographers then ask for two. This may lead you to ask if there is an extra charge for two photographers. Regardless, you really need to know who is coming to photograph the wedding.  For example at Liz Power Photography, you would ask, who will photograph my wedding? Will it be you and Terry or will it be Becca and Sharon? No extra charge?

4. Subs?

Here is a great question not everyone thinks to ask, “If you are unable to photograph our wedding or if something happens to you, who will photograph our wedding?” By now you have been over the contract and you did not see any provision for a “substitute,” so this is a HUGE question. Will the other photographers in the studio photograph the wedding and if so, do they have a portfolio? Another good question is, “Will you have any other photographers on call and can I see their work?”

5. Experience on a scale of 1-10?

This may be the most subjective question and one that is difficult to answer. It is like asking, “just how good are you?” Experience counts in so many other professions, so what about photography? There is an “army” of wedding photographers out there and they are really good but many of them are just getting started, so how can you know if they can handle doing the right thing when things go wrong? Questions about equipment, lighting, and posing are always good to ask. And by all means ask them to define their “style.” Are they photojournalists, traditionalists, storytellers, you get the idea.

6. Referrals?

“Are there brides who will refer you and are they open to me calling them?”
“Are there wedding vendors I can talk to who know how you work?”

It is perfectly okay to ask for data that will make it easier for you to contact the person being referenced. Keep in mind that you are like a prospective employer and the photographers are prospective employees so asking for references is okay, but once you hire them, consider them “friends.” This is probably true for all of the vendors you hire – they are technically your employees but if your treat them like the “hired help” you might have a mutiny on your hands.

7. Timeline?

You should want to know and not hesitate to ask the photographer how he or she works the day.  “When do you start?” This is especially important if you have only hired them for six hours or some other set amount of time. If the package you bought has unlimited time, you have every right to set the times you want to start, especially if you want your photographer to be at the hair salon to take pictures there. However, listen to the “voice of experience” when your photographer suggests a timeline that is tried and proven. At this time, you might want to hear the pros and cons of seeing each other before the ceremony and doing all of your pictures then. But that’s a subject for another day.

8. When the Day is Over, then What?

“How long should I expect to wait until I see any wedding pictures? How will they be presented? Will my family and friends be able to see all of the pictures? Will I have to take orders for pictures from them and then collect money from them?”

These are just some of the questions to ask. As to when you ask them is up to you but it seems like you should get a general idea of how the post-wedding processing works. A lot of these questions can be clarified and details given once you have hired your photographer. Speaking of processing, you may want to ask who processes the images. Does your photographer edit the pictures or are they outsourced? Most photographers have become proficient in Photoshop and are very protective of what the image looks like, so that may be a deal breaker if the photographer shows little interest in the quality of the prints.

This may also be a good time to ask, “How many pictures will you show me,” because not every picture is a “keeper.”

9. Archives?

“When will I be able to buy your images of my wedding?”

Asking the question this way really gets to the heart of the whole copyright thing. Your wedding, but they own the images. What? Yes, they have created a product that is protected by copyright laws so when you buy the images you are really buying the “rights” to make prints, post on social networks, give to relatives, and so on. Follow-up with the question, “how long do you keep the images?” And, “can I buy them three years from now at a reduced price?”

10. When do I know that I’m on your calendar?

The short answer is when the photographer receives the retainer. The “retainer” aka “deposit” is usually non-refundable. Don’t be afraid to ask about unforeseen postponements or delays or anything that might change the original wedding date. We had a bride change her wedding date and she forgot to tell us. Fortunately, when we found out from another vendor, we were still available for the “other” date. Don’t take any chances with the date of your wedding and wondering if your photographer put you on his calendar…communicate, communicate, communicate.

Okay, now you know at least ten good questions to ask when you meet with prospective photographers. Remember, they want to make a good impression too, and when you ask them questions they like to answer, you are all going to share in a great experience.  Any more questions?

Tracie and Matt were especially wanting us to photograph more of the artistic, fun pictures and, when you see the slideshow, you will see what I mean. We all had fun and it was an artist’s pallet for color and beauty.

Sound Force worked their magic in the kingdom and transformed the Rock Spring UMC fellowship hall into a fun-filled mystical, magical place. Impressions Catering had some magic of their own serving up an outstanding breakfast buffet which included Mickey Mouse shaped sausage, pancakes and waffles. Can you say, “Yummy?”

A beautiful couple, beautiful families, beautiful church, beautiful vineyard, and, oh, yeah, it was a gorgeous day! Plenty of sunshine, lots of pictures and a whole lot of family and friends made for a very, very special day.

Nicole and Tom are two of the friendliest people ever. Their families are delightful and the bridal party were just plain fun.

Thanks to the hard work of wedding event coordinator, Veronica Seaman of Veo Weddings and Events, the day went very smoothly (not counting the buses’ bumps and bruises). Nicole’s uncle brought The Grapevine Band all the way from Macon, Georgia and they rocked on.  Impressions Catering did an amazing job of catering and serving the guests and the food was outstanding.  A special thanks to The Sheraton Read House, where the bridal party and families met for pictures.

I love that their families came from all over the world; England, Germany, and France. I can’t think of a better location than the Grandview. Not only is this one of the premier views of Chattanooga, but the service, food and facility is Five Star. Dan “The Cakeman” Carey made creative and delicious wedding cakes. He is definitely the cake man.

We enjoyed working with Choo Choo Entertainment who did an outstanding job with the DJ duties. Trying to find some Armenian music using a smart phone was really creative.

The Silver Ballroom in The Sheraton Read House , with Sarah Cook serving as Manager of Wedding Events,  is a premier location in Chattanooga.  The food is really good and the service always excellent.  Four stars for the wedding cake it was delicious.  Mike Key from Great American Music sent Hunter Sims and Mike Stoess, co-workers and Lee University students, to handle the DJ duties.  They did you proud, Mike.

Jake was waiting at the front. It was just the two of them, seeing each other before the ceremony, and for the first time…she in her beautiful wedding dress and he in his tuxedo. Over the years we have met some great guys and Jake is one of the most gracious ever. Laura Beth is equally as gracious and her inner beauty is as noticeable as her outward beauty. We are just totally thankful to be their photographers.

For all of you who know Christian, this picture really captures his personality.  He is a cut-up, for sure, and at one point, Terry was having a lot of trouble keeping his camera steady because he was laughing so hard.  Anyway, I loved photographing this wedding.  Elizabeth is a sweetheart and who doesn’t love Christian.

This is one of my favorites with the whole wedding party having some fun.

I also want to say how much I appreciated all of the wedding vendors who worked at this wedding.  Marty Hughes, videographer, recorded the ceremony.  Cheryl Faulkner, Wedding Director at Cumberland Presbyterian,  did an awesome job and Grafe Studio, Florist, had beautiful arrangements.  We always love working with Sound Force who provided the reception music.  Bruce Clark selected some wonderful ceremony music and we heard him play the harp for the first time at a wedding.  The food was exceptional catered by Gary Klein at Baylor.  Good job everyone!

Ken and Wanda’s home in Council Fire has to be one of the top ten. It is spectacular and I was excited to photograph Heather and Jon in and around this amazing setting. I might add how welcomed Terry and I both felt by everyone and what a special day! It was awesome.

Heather and Jon are so engaging and down-to-earth and I totally loved doing their “before the ceremony photographs.” Sherri Thomas, wedding coordinator from Weddings By Design, was amazing. Not only did she have a complete timeline for us to follow, she also had a sweet spirit that is totally necessary to ensure smooth sailing.

The first dance was one of the best of the night and Jon’s lead had us all applauding.

Congratulations to Heather and Jon.  I know they would want me to acknowledge all of the fine work of their wedding vendors.  First of all, The Fairyland Club and Tammy Puryear for excellent food and service.   The beautiful ceremony music by The Adonia String Trio and then our good friend, Phillip Newton and Sound Force.  The always amazing floral arrangements by Divine Designs and Amanda Williams.  Laura Stanger and The White Table and their elegant touch.  Great job everyone!!!

Because Ashley was away at veterinary school, Jeremiah was called upon to do a lot of the initial consultations. I personally was very impressed with his attention to detail and, no doubt, Ashley was grateful for his help.

Most grooms don’t get that involved so I can only imagine that Jeremiah was just as relieved as Ashley when all of their hard work culminated in an amazing wedding ceremony and awesome reception.

The ceremony took place in the very beautiful sanctuary of 1st Centenary United Methodist. After the ceremony, we met at the old county courthouse for some more bride and groom pictures and then on to reception in the silver ballroom of the historic Sheraton Read House.

When it was time to seat the guests, it started to sprinkle but Reidun and her Grandview helpers quickly distributed umbrellas.  Fortunately they weren’t needed because the rain stopped.

The ceremony ended with the traditional “you may kiss the bride,” and the patio was quickly transformed in order to seat the guests at the reception.  Just then it started to rain again.  Although it wasn’t raining hard, it did cause the musicians to move the sound equipment inside. and it became the scene of the giving of the toasts and the first dance.

The good news is that while all that was going on, the dark clouds were replaced by some fluffy white clouds and blue sky.  Rozellyn took this to be the sign to move the party back outside which turned out to be a good call because it was one glorious evening with cool breezes and a starry, moonlit night.

Jeffney Fletcher and Allison Eubanks did an outstanding job as wedding directors and, as always, the Grandview staff was wonderfully attentive and gracious. I think everyone enjoyed the wedding cakes baked by Dan, The Cakeman.

Mahmoud is an amazing young man and he and Linda were so easy to photograph.  With the help of Linda’s sister, Laura, and her mom, Abeer, we were able to get some awesome pictures. I hope you’ll enjoy the slideshow along with the accompanying favorites seen here.

Terry and I really enjoyed getting to spend some quality time with them. Not only does this give us the opportunity to learn more of their story but it gives them a chance to get to know us.

Ashley is studying veterinary medicine which means Jeremiah is totally involved in the wedding planning. Their date is just a few weeks away but it sounded like all of the plans were coming together nicely. I think they had a good time with us and said they were glad they decided to go ahead with the engagement session. We are too! Among her many qualities is joyfulness and you can imagine that this is contagious. I think we all felt the excitement and joy Emy felt as she became Mrs. Ronny Moore.

As we began the photographs at the Gordon Lee Mansion, Emy related how the day started with locking her keys in the running car with her dress, the bridesmaids dresses and her luggage packed for the honeymoon…and, oh yes, her cell phone. She managed to get it unlocked and told us later, if that was the worst thing then it was going to be a good, good day. Emy, it was a good, good day! Congratulations!!!

I love the expression on Jennifer Crawford, sister of the bride. Jennifer is a dear friend and one of our former brides!

There was a sweet spirit in Lindsay Street Hall as Holly and Brian exchanged their vows. And, while four-year-old Emma watched her new family being created, we all felt very blessed to be there.

Holly and Brian are a sweet couple and a pleasure to photograph. Add in the unique architecture and plenty of time to spend with the bride and groom and it equals a really good day.

 

We enjoyed seeing Dan, the Cakeman, Carey who once again delivered some delicious wedding cakes. Serving the guests with good food and attentiveness were our friends from Goetz Catering, a favorite with us.

I would like to add what a privilege it was for us to photograph Holly and Brian’s wedding. Terry and I wish them the very best that life has to offer and we especially pray God’s blessing on them.
